by Diana Gabaldon
Synopsis: The year is 1771, and war is coming. Jamie Fraser’s wife tells him so. Little as he wishes to, he must believe it, for hers is a gift of dreadful prophecy—a time-traveler’s certain knowledge. Claire’s unique view of the future has brought him both danger and deliverance in the past; her knowledge of the oncoming revolution is a flickering torch that may light his way through the perilous years ahead—or ignite a conflagration that will leave their lives in ashes.
Review:
The Fiery Cross takes us back once again to 18th century North Carolina. This book, as the rest are, is very detailed about day to day life. If the author was describing the details of day to day life from present day, that would be trivial and boring, but learning the day to day workings of men and women in the 18th century is fascinating.
Roger
and Bree are finally together and Roger must try and make his peace
with his father-in-law, Jamie. Claire is caught in the middle of the
struggle between Jamie, Bree and Roger and tries to bring peace to
her family and support to her hard headed daughter and even more
stubborn husband. The book opens at the great clan gathering in North
Carolina. Jamie and Roger take their place as leaders in clan
society, and Claire continues to make a name for herself as a great
healer and physician.
Amid
the fun and gaiety of the clan gathering, there is a quiet ever present
rumble. The rumble of upcoming war. Claire, Bree and Roger have told
Jamie of the future war with England, and it looks like it's
beginning. As much as Jamie and Claire want to run away and hide from
another war, they are once again pulled into battle. This time Claire
must watch Bree and Roger fight along side Jamie.
This
wasn't my favorite book in the Outlander series, but it is a
necessary continuation in the story of Jamie, Claire, Bree and Roger.
There is lots of detail in the story, and sometimes the flow seems to
get lost, but stick with it, the ends justifies the means. Anyone
that has read this far in the series will feel the need to continue
and spend more time with Jamie and Claire. I love watching Claire struggle to advance medicine in the 18th
century and Bree use her engineering degree to make advances around
the house with mixed results. Read on, trust me, it's worth it. Next
is Breath of Snow and Ashes.
