Breath of Snow and Ashes by Diana Gabaldon

Breath of Snow and Ashes
by Diana Gabaldon

          Synopsis:
The year is 1772, and on the eve of the American Revolution, the long fuse of rebellion has already been lit. Men lie dead in the streets of Boston, and in the backwoods of North Carolina, isolated cabins burn in the forest.

With chaos brewing, the governor calls upon Jamie Fraser to unite the backcountry and safeguard the colony for King and Crown. But from his wife Jamie knows that three years hence the shot heard round the world will be fired, and the result will be independence — with those loyal to the King either dead or in exile. And there is also the matter of a tiny clipping from The Wilmington Gazette, dated 1776, which reports Jamie’s death, along with his kin. For once, he hopes, his time-traveling family may be wrong about the future.

Review:
Revolution is coming. The American Revolution, that is, and Jamie and Claire must decide what side to take. Do they support the governor and try and suppress the rebellion, going against what Claire knows to be the outcome, or do they support the rebels and fight for freedom and risk losing everything they have built in the North Carolina mountains? Also, there is the ever present fear knowing the December 1776 article in the Wilmington Gazette states that the Frasers die in a fire. This tragedy is only 3 years away. Should Jamie take his family back to Scotland and risk imprisonment and starvation, or stay in America and risk war and death?

These are the questions that haunt Jamie Fraser daily. Breath of Snow and Ashes chronicles the Fraser's decision to stay in America a fight with the rebels using Claire, Bree and Roger's knowledge of the future. War and tragedy have come to the Fraser's Ridge. Jamie and Claire hold out on the Ridge as long as they can, but finally Jamie's regiment must go and fight.

This book once again takes us into war, like Drums of Autumn did. But the war is just beginning and it's going to be a long battle. Settle in and be prepared, this book is another thrilling action packed, violent adventure. The author is an expert at mining out the most minute details of day to day life and the continuing love that Jamie and Claire share is so lovely and heartbreaking at times. A great addition to the fabulous Outlander series. Next is An Echo in the Bone.
